Sleek and stylish door and window systems from Darley Aluminium have helped transform a small, dark two-bedroom home into an airy, light-filled family oasis.
When the owner of the semi-detached property in Sydney’s inner-west decided to renovate, they knew the door and window systems would be key to achieving maximum light and a sense of space.
This included the handles and locks that secure and operate the systems – small elements that can have a big impact on the look of the finished interior.
They wanted clean, modern systems and colour-matched furniture to fit the aesthetic they were aiming for – and they knew exactly where to go for help!
Darley Aluminium offers the personal touch
The homeowner is a long-time friend and colleague of Ray Kwan, Darley Aluminium’s National Sales Manager.
“Ray helped me talk through the aesthetic of the frames. With a lot of the residential products, the profile can be quite busy, whereas a commercial solution provides a streamlined profile,” the homeowner says.
They decided on CityView systems, fabricated and installed by Dave Postle from A-Tryme Glass and Glazing. The door systems were fitted with Austral Lock Forge furniture, while Austral Lock Pearl furniture was chosen for the window systems.
The Forge and Pearl ranges are powder-coated locally and are available in 24 colours, making colour matching to systems easy. The homeowner chose white gloss throughout for a seamless, low-profile look.
“I wanted white frames to help make the rooms brighter, and to have the windows and doors blend in. I felt that black would be too heavy. The exterior light and the view is the hero, not the mechanics of the frame standing out,” the homeowner says.
“It was nice to have clean furniture that matches the clean lines of the frames. The hardware is functional but blends in. I didn’t want a black lock on a white door.”
There are 15 new doors and windows in the now four-bedroom, three-bath home. After knocking through walls, the home also features a stunning new open plan living area and kitchen that opens up onto a rear deck through sliding doors.
Why it pays to carefully consider the choice of furniture
In this project, the homeowner chose the contemporary Forge range for the security and the function. With options for hinged and sliding security doors, surface mount patio doors, mortice sliding and hinged doors and bifold doors, the range allowed the same style of furniture to be used throughout the property.
The Forge range can be paired with Virtus locks. Models in the Virtus range feature anti-slam technology, an interior snib for keyless locking and are compatible with Euro cylinders that include a thumb turn. This ensures doors can be quickly opened from the inside. For the windows, the Pearl range is low profile to blend in, and features easy fingertip operation.
The homeowner says it’s easy to underestimate the impact furniture can have on the overall aesthetic, and people often don’t think much about it, especially when decision fatigue sets in!
For example, furniture that isn’t consistent or colour matched can date an interior. It’s also about function, and ensuring that everything works together. For instance, recessed handles might be necessary on sliding doors that also have a security screen, to prevent clashing.
“You don’t want an installer showing up on the day and cobbling something together,” the homeowner says.
“Those bigger decisions like insulation, bricks and roof tiles that cost a lot of money? You don’t see them day-to-day. Door furniture is something you touch every day and you’re going to have a lasting feeling of ‘are you happy with how that turned out’. You can underestimate the importance.”
